"I chose RAMES because I am interested in georesources and this was the only MSc that gave me the possibility to focus on geomaterials, which are our present and I guess will be our future too. In this programme I found useful the possibility to study a variety of topics ranging from mineral deposits to economy, for instance. This gave me a broader view of raw materials, not only from a geological – and therefore technical – point of view, but also from a more economic and social point of view" (Francesca).

A graduate of Camborne School of Mines, Lucy Crane is a geologist working in Cornwall, exploring for lithium within geothermal waters.

As the world transitions to a decarbonised economy, we need to mine more materials than we have ever done before to support those low carbon technologies. From wind turbines to batteries for electric cars, to the two thirds of the periodic table that are in your mobile phone, we have to find a way to sustainably extract materials. We have to find a way to source these materials responsibly, because without them we don’t have a chance.

Rare metals and other critical materials are all around us; in our phones, computers, cars & cities. These valuable resources are in limited supply, and will eventually run out.

That’s why it is essential to discover and develop sustainable design and engineering methods to improve the reuse, repair, remanufacturing, and recycling of products for a #circulareconomy.
